For homeowners aged 62 or older who own their homes outright, a Reverse Mortgage can convert a portion of the home’s equity into cash. The benefit of a reverse mortgage is that no monthly payments are required—the loan is repaid when the home is sold or permanently vacated. This allows seniors to remain in their homes while accessing the funds needed for remodels and improvements.

5. State Housing Finance Agency Loans and Grants

Alabama residents can also explore state-specific financial assistance options. State Housing Finance Agencies (HFAs) and nonprofit organizations like Rebuilding Together offer loans and grants that can help seniors pay for aging in place renovations. Additionally, there may be resources available through the Older Americans Act, distributed by Area Agencies on Aging (AAA). Be sure to check income limits and eligibility criteria with your local Housing Finance Agency.
